    Conductivity-Temperature-Depth meter (CTD)

    The primary workhorse for water column sampling is the conductivity-temperature-depth meter (CTD), an electronic package that we deploy over the side of the ship at sampling stations.

    The package measures conductivity by passing a current through the water. We convert the conductivity measurement to salinity by comparing the result to conductivities of water with known salinities. The CTD measures temperature with an electronic thermometer and depth with a pressure sensor.

    Salinity, temperature, and pressure are used to calculate water density. These four parameters are the basic pieces of information we always need to evaluate other data from seawater.

    The electronic information produced by most of the other underwater instruments discussed in this article can be linked through the CTD. The data travel to the ship through a conducting cable and we view them in real time on a computer screen.

    We can also surround the CTD with a rack of water bottles that are open at both ends. As the bottles descend their ends can be closed at whatever depths we desire depending on the water characteristics revealed by the other instruments. On the surface we analyze the water and its particles for the property we are studying.

    Độ dẫn điện - nhiệt độ - độ muối.
    Workhorse cơ bản (sơ cấp) cho cột nước lấy mẫu là máy đo độ dẫn điện - nhiệt độ - độ muối (CTD), thiết bị điện tử được dàn dựng trên tàu tại các trạm lấy mẫu.
    Thiết bị này đo độ dẫn điện bởi 1 dòng trong chảy trong nước. chúng chuyển độ dẫn điện thành độ muối bằng cách so sánh với độ dẫn điện của nước với độ muối biết trước. CTD đo nhiệt độ với nhiệt kế điện tử và độ sâu bằng sensor áp suất.
    Độ muối, nhiệt độ và áp dùng để tính mật độ nước. 4 thông số này là loại thông tin cơ bản chúng ta cần đánh giá các dữ liệu khác từ nước biển.
    Thông tin điện tử được sinh ra từ các thiết bị khác ở dưới nước dựa trên mối liên quan với CTD. Các dữ liệu đo từ trên tàu trong suốt hành trình theo thời gian thực.
    Chúng ta có thể bao quanh CTD với những sự phá vỡ của ống nước được mở tại đáy. Khi đưa ống nước đi xuống đến cuối tại bất cứ giá trị nào của độ sâu mà chúng còn phụ thuộc vào đặc tính của nước, chúng bị phát hiện nhờ các thiết bị khác. Trên bề mặt, chúng ta phân tích nước và các hạt nước theo đặc tính mà ta nghiên cứu.
